An introduction to vaping and how devices work
Vaping is the act of inhaling an aerosol from an electronic cigarette, and those that vape are known as vapers. It is classified as Tobacco Harm Reduction and therefore intended for adult smokers only.
It mimics the act of smoking and offers a safer means of enjoying flavours, with or without nicotine. There’s no smoke and unlike tobacco, virtually no lingering odour. Second-hand Vapour has proven to be harmless too.
It is a fact of science that vaping is at least 95 % safer than smoking. In regards to vaping nicotine, reputable members of science and medicine equate the level of harm to that of drinking coffee.
How e-cigarettes work
Vaping is possible due to three major hardware items. A Battery or Power supply unit, an Atomiser or Coil, and a Tank.
One can purchase these parts separately, customising their device, or buy a more introductory closed system. Irrespective of the size, shape or style, they all operate in the same manner, sharing the same principals.
When the battery is activated, it heats the Atomiser or Coil, thus causing the e-liquid to heat and creating the aerosol, more commonly referred to as vapour. A wick is also necessary and is generally made from organic cotton. These Coils are essentially small heating elements housed in some form of a delivery system. The most common form is a Tank, such as a Clearomiser.
Coils are replaceable and tend to last about a week or two, however, there are factors that will determine the overall lifespan such as type, e-liquid & viscosity, wattage used and frequency of vape.
Obviously, e-liquid is needed to produce the flavoured vapour. e-liquid is also referred to as juice or e juice, and is available with or without nicotine.
Today, there are three main types of e-Cigs
Regardless of the type of e-Cigarette, they all offer refillable or replaceable tanks, and as such we can control the contents of our e-liquid, reducing or eliminating cancer-causing carcinogens found in tobacco cigarettes. Be aware that pharmaceutical grade nicotine is not carcinogenic, besides, most of the harm stems from combustion, which is not present when vaping.
The majority of today’s e-Cigs offer longer life batteries, an array of safety features, and the ability to adjust wattage or power. This does not apply to most AIO styles, as the power output is generally set and governed by the Coil or Atomiser specs.
Many of today’s beginner devices, such as the AIO’s, have only a single fire button yet, are sufficiently powerful to assist with transitioning from smoking.
As complex or confusing as this may sound, it generally takes just a few minutes to comprehend the necessary basics.
A quality All In One Starter e-Cig kit, including extra Coils and e-liquid, can be purchased for around the $80 mark, perhaps a little less. A decent Mod kit generally costs a tad more, but still under the $100 mark.
My hope is that those smokers who are willing to quit, and those that are not, discover the health and financial benefits of switching to vaping.
